I know this may not make sense at first, but you can eat dessert on a keto diet if you just know how! My journey with taking unhealthy recipes and trying to make them healthy started when I was a kid.
Back then, I mainly started taking unhealthy recipes and making low-GI versions them by trying to replace the sugar or at least half of the sugar with fruit and I added digestive bran to just about everything.
My smoothies contained at least three fruits, and I still overloaded my body with sugar without realising just how much I was eating.
I grew up, and my healthy treats became even healthier. My baked goods and sweet indulgences switched from low-GI to mostly ketogenic (low-carb, high fat). So, how do you eat dessert on a keto diet? Here are a few things you need to know when you go keto and want sweet treats:
You Can Have Sweet Treats, but Choose Ones With Low-Carb Ingredients
If you are creative, there are a lot of keto-friendly ingredients you can use to make healthy treats that won’t kick you out of keto, such as:
Sweeteners that won’t affect your blood sugar levels like stevia or erythritol;
Coconut oil, ghee, and butter; and
Coconut cream and regular cream.
See? You can eat dessert on a keto diet. If you feel like you lack creativity on a particular day or completely, just do a quick Google, Pinterest, or YouTube search for keto desserts.
Better yet, search for your favourite desserts and you might find that your prayers have been answered (I swear I heard angels singing the day I made my keto chocolate and hazelnut spread for the first time).
Use Low-Sugar Fruits or None at All When Making Desserts on a Keto Diet
Well, for starters, you might not want to use fruit to sweeten your recipes if you are or want to be on a keto diet, unless you use low-sugar fruits like berries and still keep your intake moderate.
Try to Find Keto Snacks and Treats in Stores and Online
With search algorithms, nowadays, you can just type “keto snacks” into Google and click on the Shopping tab when you do so to find keto candy bars and cookies you can get where you live. Perhaps you can order it online or at least do your research to see what you should look for in stores.
I highly recommend that you do your research. When shopping at stores in your area, if they have a health foods section like many stores do, or even if you are shopping at a health foods store, see if they have any cookies, bars, etc. that are keto.
I find new keto treat options all the time in South Africa, ones that I can order online and buy in stores. Once you know what healthy treat options are out there, and which keto treats you can make at home, your life could be changed forever.
Believe me when I say that I eat more dessert on a keto diet just because I learned how to choose the right ingredients, and because I learned what to look for in products. If you want to learn how to eat dessert on a keto diet daily, I will teach you everything I know to help you live a delicious life.
