I believe in the importance of learning to love yourself. There is an amazing self-love quote from supermodel Miranda Kerr that says:
“A rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. All flowers are beautiful in their own way, and that’s like women too. I want to encourage women to embrace their own uniqueness.”
Comparing yourself to others is something that you might struggle to stop doing. As a recovering comparison addict, I know what it is like to compare yourself to every woman you meet. My main focus has always been beauty, and if I meet someone who I believe is more beautiful than me, or who is leaner than I am, I cannot help but get insecure.
My insecurities about the way I look have made me incredibly socially awkward at times, because I let it make me feel embarrassed and inferior. Instead of enjoying the party, I would sit quietly and obsess over all of the girls who were there who I believed were beautiful. I would sit and plan how, the next day, I would workout harder and do everything I can to lose weight and clear my skin, so that I could be just as beautiful.
I am not going to lie… that was me a few weeks ago, but I am trying my best to make this year my year of self-love. Loving yourself is not always easy, and while my main reasons for struggling with it are related to my appearance, you might have your own reasons.
After a bad acne breakout left me feeling like the ugly duckling once again, I remembered this quote from Miranda Kerr. I decided to get a tattoo of a sunflower to remind myself that even though I look different, it does not mean that I am ugly. It serves as a constant reminder to focus on the things that make me special.
There is another quote that I love by Zen Shin that states:
“A flower does not think of competing to the flower next to it. It just blooms.”
It’s not that easy to get to a place where you truly love yourself. And it is difficult not to compare yourself to others if you have been doing it all your life. It helps to pick a flower that you resonate with. I am a sunflower.
Self-love is much easier to achieve if you focus on just becoming the best version of yourself. You can still appreciate the beauty of those around you without questioning whether you are beautiful or not. Here are a few self-love tips from flowers that can help you when you struggle to stop comparing yourself to others.
- Remind yourself that you are a flower.
- Focus on ways that you can improve yourself that will allow you to bloom.
- List three physical and three other things that you like about yourself when you feel a little wilted and need extra self-love.
- Remember that you are part of a beautiful field of different flowers, all coming together to make the perfect picture.
- Show your beauty. Take care of yourself and celebrate your best qualities. Flowers don’t hide their beauty, they show it.
